How to Fry Bacon Southern Style
How do you get that perfect bacon, fried in Cast Iron (well, you can use a regular pan!). This is how you do it!
Instructions
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Things You’ll Need:
- Bacon
- Maybe some oil
- Tongs
- Paper towel
- Plate
- Splatter Screen (optional)
Step1
Place bacon in COLD pan, I like cast iron but any fry pan will work ok.
Step2
If your bacon is rather meaty you may want to add a bit of oil so it fries up properly. I like olive oil, but any preference of yours is ok.
Step3
Set heat at medium to medium high, I am lucky and have a gas stove
Step4
As the bacon heats up, separate it piece by piece with the tongs.
Step5
Spread it evenly around the pan.
Step6
If you have a splatter screen, it can save a lot of mess!
Step7
Once it starts to look like this you will need to be there to turn it often.
Step8
Turn it sections at a time with the tongs.
Step9
Everybody likes their bacon different, some people like it ‘floppy’ so when it starts to look like this, keep an eye on it as it will crisp quick.
Step10
We like ours crispy, so I take out anyone else’s first and ‘finish’ ours.
Step11
At this point I start turning it from one side of the pan to the other, then do it again till it is browned through. This makes sure it is evenly crispy.
Step12
Once all is browned, drain with the other bacon on a paper towel lined plate and you can save the grease or use it to cook eggs in, I tend to save the grease for other southern dishes
Tips & Warnings
- Stay with it, don’t walk away!
